CBS News in Pittsburgh recently reported on a heartbreaking story about a dog that died of a suspected pet food, a newly opened bag. Within 24 hours the dog was “Violently ill”. Even with veterinary treatment, the dog died 2 days later.
Pet food was made from kinetic, no information was provided to specific foods or parties.
The pet food was two months that expired, but it is doubtful to be earlier output was the cause of the disease. The pet owner has several dogs but only one dog for the suspected kinetic food; “The other dogs had smelled it and passed away.”
The Pittsburgh CBS -TV station reporting on this issue stated that they contacted the pet manufacturer (Kinetic). “Kinetic expressed his condolences to the winter family but blamed both the distributor and the supplier so as not to monitor their warehouse and not to destroy food so that it would not be sold to customers.”
Again, it is likely that a dry pet food is not counterfeit/toxic solely because it is earlier output.
Kinetic pet food stated that they ended their relationship with the distributor and supplier …But what they did the next is about.
“Kinetic says it tells both the distributor and the supplier to destroy the food and send the photographic proof.”
Yes … Expired pet food should be destroyed. Since the food is linked to the death of a pet – pet food should not be destroyed until an investigation is complete.
If this pet food is contaminated, the supervisory authorities will want to test unopened bags. If these bags of pet foods are destroyed – as requested by the pet manufacturer – may not be proper testing.
Existing regulations on pets require “A responsible party” to report to the FDA a potential pollution within 24 hours. However, the FDA only classifies the manufacturer as the “responsible party” (retailer or distributors is not required to report a suspected pet food). And there are currently no regulations that require a distributor to keep suspected pet food until proper testing can be completed.
The pet owners have sent the suspected kinetic pet food for testing. We hope that the pet owners submitted a side effect report to the FDA and to the PA Ministry of Agriculture to have the incident documented. If more is learned, it will be shared.
