According to a new post published in PetFoodProcessing.com, sales of Purina Pet Food are set to decline dramatically by 2025. “Ahead of continued efforts to gain momentum in pet care, Nestlé plans to focus on the cat category, as it revealed during its nine-month and third-quarter earnings call. In addition, the company also shared plans to cut its workforce by 16,000 over the next two years in efforts to save costs, according to its financial report for the period Sept. 30.”
The same post revealed it Purina Pet Foods sales have decreased in the first nine months of 2025 (compared to the first nine months of 2024) by $550 million.
Perhaps Purina's sales are declining due to increased pet owner awareness of the nutritional differences between highly processed pet food (kibble) and minimally processed human-grade pet food, backed by science that proves what so many of us already know—the benefits of fresh, human-grade pet food.
In a recent long study funded by The Farmer's Dog pet food – “Senior dogs showed dramatic changes in metabolism after 30 days when switched from a forage diet to a fresh feed diet, which was maintained throughout the year-long feeding period, demonstrating a healthy adaptation to a lower-carbohydrate, minimally processed diet.”
From the press release about the study: “The results revealed that dogs fed the fresh food experienced a rapid and sustained metabolic change after just one month, marked by lower levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) – harmful compounds linked to aging and chronic disease. These dogs also showed reduced sucrose and 1,5-anhydroglucitol (a glycemic control of biomarkers such as 6 methyllysicine, which are not specific for N-AGE). and pyrraline—highlight the benefits of avoiding highly processed diets.”
Several years ago, fresh pet food manufacturer JustFoodforDogs funded a digestibility study which found that a fresh food diet is “40% more digestible compared to similar studies looking at dry dog ​​food.”
Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman at the University of Helsinki has published several studies showing the health benefits of minimally processed pet food, including one that “investigated how a dog's early diet can influence the development of chronic enteropathy (CE), which is a long-term, chronic intestinal condition, later in life. Using data from Finnish dogs, we found that feeding puppies and adolescent dogs an unprocessed, meat-based diet, including raw bones, cartilage and CE scraps, was associated with human meal and CE. Puppyhood was also protective. On the other hand, diets high in processed carbohydrates, such as kibble, and feeding raw hides during puppyhood increased the risk of CE. The results suggest that diet in early life plays an important role in gut health later in life.”
