A company in Belgium is proud to announce that they have “Made a dedicated plant to transform by -products from the French breeding industry into dried potato meal for pet food applications.”
“The dried potato goal time is produced by grinding and drying raw potato rides from the French breeding industry.
“By using Potato by -products that would otherwise be discardedRE: The source contributes to waste reduction and resource efficiency in the food chain. “
Are these potatoes simply potato scales? Or rotting potatoes? Or treated with pesticides or chemicals? We don't know. Pet owners will not be informed.
Consumers deserve to know that ingredients like this are ingredients up waste. The ingredient name 'potato protein' does not explain the necessary information for pet owners. The same applies to other cycled waste ingredients commonly used in pet food, for example:
Meat meals -What chicken meal, by-product meal-are residues from processing human food. These ingredients may include dead (non-slaughtered) or diseased animals that are rejected for use in human foods that would otherwise be regarded as waste and a problem for disposing/expenses for the meat industry.
Animal fat -Another ingredient that can be taken from dead (non-slaughtered) or sick animals.
Bet pulp – Remains from the manufacture of sugar (taken from sugar beets).
Brews rice – Remains from brewing of beer/alcohol.
In many cases, ingredients for feed quality of all types would be considered ingredients with cycled waste. As an example – every meat ingredient for feed quality can be taken from condemned animal material that would otherwise have to be disposed of (without permission from the FDA to discard these materials in pet food – even if they are illegal in food).
In just three months (April – June 2025), USDA reported that 41,436 livestock layers were condemned and 1,266,372 poultry bodies were condemned. This is an estimated 27 million pounds condemned animal bodies sold to pet food – and then sold to pet owners such as beef, chicken, pork. But not revealed as up-cycled waste.
While pieces and pieces of pure potatoes such as leftovers from French breeding can (emphasis can) be suitable as a pet food ingredient, it is unknown about these cycled waste ingredients much greater than any potential advantage. And not one of these commonly used pet food ingredients that are properly revealing their quality for pet food consumers.
The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine and Aafco must take steps to require transparent disclosure for pet food consumers which ingredients are cycled waste. The ingredient names must inform what they actually are to pet owners.
Please send E -post to FDA at: askcvm@fda.hhs.gov and aafco at: aafco@aafco.org with your problems.
If you have questions to quality regarding ingredient in your pet's food, ask the manufacturer. You want insurance ingredients to be human edible; Do not feed quality, not up-cycled waste.
